Douglas Martin’s full-length ballet, Pride and Prejudice, which debuted in April of 2017, brings the 1813 romantic classic penned by Jane Austen to life, celebrating its beloved tale of love, manners and marriage in the English gentry, a broad social class that includes those who owned land (the country or landed gentry) as well as the professional classes (lawyers, doctors and clergy) who did not. Specifically, it follows the main character, Elizabeth Bennet, as she deals with issues of manners, upbringing, morality, education and marriage in the society of the landed gentry of the British Regency. The ballet is supported by the wonderfully melodic music of Ignaz Pleyel, the Austrian-born French composer, with costumes tailored to showcase the fashions of the English Regency period from 1790–1820.

Carmen
American Repertory Ballet Carmen at its debut appearance at the highly regarded Gerald W. Lynch Theater, located on the campus of John Jay College of Criminal Justice, New York City. The program opens with Kirk Peterson’s The Eyes that Gently Touch, set to the driving rhythms of Philip Glass’ Mad Rush, culminating in a dance replete with romance and thrilling movement. Next is Mary Barton’s Straight Up with a Twist, a work set to the eclectic sounds of Kaila Flexer and Third Ear which showcases the versatility of ARB’s dancers and Barton’s choreographic genius. The performance concludes with another company premiere: Peterson’s Carmen. Based on Georges Bizet’s opera, Peterson tells the tale of Carmen, a passionate, free-spirited woman, the fickle Don José and her love triangle between Don José and popular bullfighter Escamillo.
Since opening its doors in 1988, the Gerald W. Lynch Theater has been an invaluable cultural resource for John Jay College and the larger New York City community. The Theater is also a member of CUNY Stages, a consortium of 16 performing arts centers located on CUNY campuses across New York City.
